Newness

First, let me start off by hoping everyone enjoyed their holiday (whichever one you might celebrate!), and I hope everyone had a safe and uneventful trip if you traveled!

Our holiday worked out much differently than anticipated. Bobble had a very sad  looking rash on his bottom on Monday night (Monday the 17th), and by Tuesday afternoon it was quite apparent he had gotten Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease. The poor boy was COVERED. We contacted family and opted to hold off with any visiting.

He was much better by the weekend, but still had spots (so still contagious). Either way, I was glad we didn't travel.... I ended up with the Flu on Friday! My goodness, did my body hurt to be awake! Mostly my hips and spine ached, but all of my muscles/joints ached... those were just the worse! By Saturday I was doing much better, but had a spot on my hand. Sunday I woke up to see it was quite obvious that my immune system being down opened the door for me to also get HFM.

Today my HFM is nearly gone. The spots aren't really easily visible anymore (I was so thankful I got it so mildly!).... but I woke up with a COLD!

*sigh*

It's just one thing after another for this house.... especially me! Being pregnant really kicks your immune system down a notch, and if you get one thing, watch out! When my already weakened immune system (from pregnancy) was hit with that flu, then it was all over. I got what Bobble had, then I got that blasted cold..... and I'm hoping the cold is really the end of it!

On the bright side, Bobble thoroughly enjoyed his holiday this year! He actually participated in the unwrapping of presents this time, and loved every minute of it. In fact, he wanted to unwrap all the presents.... including his daddy's.

Other than that, I must say that everything was really just another day. I guess that's what happens when you don't go see family or anything. We ordered Chinese for dinner and enjoyed watching a movie and eating some delicious food that we didn't have to clean up after (because we didn't cook!).

I'm able to write this midday since we are getting pounded with snow and I had to leave work early. That, and it's nap time for Bobble. Lucky you!

How was your holiday? Did you do anything fun? Different? Unexpected?

Earth's Best Jarred Foods (food safety)

Being a big fan of baby-led weaning, I admittedly had limited knowledge on jarred baby foods. As you might know from previous posts, I have had experience with some food pouches (especially as of late!), but I've never gone out and purchased a jar of baby food for Bobble. Never.

Photobucket

Earth's Best recently sent me a couple jars of baby food (they have LOTS of flavours of jarred foods!), and, admittedly, I stared at them with no idea what to do. I didn't really want to spoon feed them to my toddler (nor did I think he'd be a fan of that idea), but I still wanted to use them. One of the jars, Apple & Blueberry puree, sounded like a winner. Then I realized something! I could mix the jarred fruit purees in with some greek yogurt for Bobble! He loves yogurt! Still, I wanted to see if he liked the flavour of the food first, so I popped open the jar (took a taste myself -- yum!) and grabbed a spoon.

Bobble was watching a show since I had been switching over the laundry, so he was preoccupied when I went in there. I got a spoonful and tried to get it in his mouth. He kept turning his head, but finally took a small taste since I told him he could keep watching his show if he tasted it. He loved it. I let him have a little bit more, but didn't realize I was actually doing something that wasn't exactly 'safe'.

Like I said before, I never had purchased baby food JARS, and it never dawned on me that there would be rules for how to use them. Sure, I knew you shouldn't let them sit out after opening, and I figured you should throw them out if not used within a couple of days of opening.... but some of it I just never thought of.... like washing the jar and lid of the container before opening it. Sure, thinking back, that makes sense. Who knows what could have touched it when stocking the shelves! Also, it's recommended that you spoon food into a bowl instead of feeding directly from the jar. Another thing I completely didn't do. Oops.

Check out Earth's Best's post on Keeping Baby Food Safe to make sure you're keeping your little one's food safe!

As far as the debate over jarred food or pouches of food, I think I've learned that there is a place for jarred food in our household. For the most part, pouches are best for us since we usually just keep them on hand for on-the-go situations. I really like the idea of having the jars (of fruit) on hand to mix into yogurt, though. You could also use those for adding to cakes, muffins, breads, etc., and have more flavour and moisture! (Not to mention more vitamins!!!)

Were you aware of the ways to keep jarred food safe?

Earth's Best Pouched Products (Review)

Many of you are familiar with store-bought baby food being available in both pouch and jar form now. Earth's Best sent me a variety of their pouches to review, and I'm happy to say these have been fantastic for us!

If you remember correctly, I am a big fan of baby-led weaning, and didn't want to be feeding my child purees. With Bobble pushing 2 years old, however, I've had to get more creative. Grabbing an Earth's Best Greek Yogurt pouch and chasing him down to squeeze some in his mouth before he runs over to his cars or blocks has become fairly common. He loves yogurt, and he loves eating... but he loves playing more. While he knows how to feed himself, sitting him in a chair to eat is more likely to find me cleaning yogurt out of his hair, the curtains, and the carpet than it making it into his belly if he is in that playful mood. Thank goodness for these pouches!

While we get Bobble to eat table food most of the time, sometimes it's simply a losing battle. Trucks are more interesting. His balls are more interesting. Heck, the cats are more interesting! When it's time to eat and he simply isn't going to sit still, at least I know if I grab an Earth's Best Organic pouch that he'll be getting healthy food that is free of all those nasty things (like antibiotics, pesticides, hormones, GMOs, etc.) and full of everything this super busy toddler needs (wholesome grains, organic fruits and veggies, plentiful vitamins and minerals).

Sure, ideally my son would sit at the table, skillfully use his utensils, wipe up his own messes, and always eat every last bit on his plate. Of course, in reality, I can't give him a plate without it being thrown at some point, so I pick my battles. Finding food that he thinks tastes great and I know is great for him doesn't have to be a battle with Earth's Best. Between all the pouches they offer, I have everything from simple fruits, yogurt smoothies, and simple veggies, to delicious combinations of flavours like Pumpkin Cranberry Apple and Apple Peach Oatmeal... and it's all at my finger tips.

Photobucket

I keep two pouches in my diaper bag for those times I'm on the run and need to feed Bobble while we're out and about, and there are always a few at home for those times he just is too busy to sit down and eat.

Available in 1st Foods Pouches (for babies 4 months and older), 2nd Foods Pouches (6 months and older), and 3rd Foods pouches (9 months and older), and their Just For Toddlers pouches (Sesame Street Fruit Yogurt Smoothies), there is something for every stage your baby will be in!

You can find Earth's Best Pouches at a grocer near you that carries Earth’s Best products, or you can use the Earth’s Best Store Locator to find a location near you! You can also order them online at the Earth’s Best Store, from Amazon.com, any other online retailers where you can buy Earth’s Best pouches!

Dropping In

It's definitely difficult for me to find time to write now that I only have a desktop to use, and the monitor for it happens to be our television! Bobble is taking a nap right now, so I have a few minutes to let you all know what's going on.

I'd like to start out by saying "welcome!" to all our new followers! I hope you enjoy what you read, and I encourage everyone to leave comments or questions about topics they want covered. I know posts that aren't bigger giveaways have been few and far between these last few months, but hopefully this isn't going to be a continuing trend.

We've been reviewing some products lately in our house. Keep an eye out for some reviews on skin care products (for baby), a diaper review, and maybe even something that is useful for when baby is sick. Trying not to give too good of hints!

Oh, and if you're curious, Bobble is expanding his role as a crazy toddler to a soon-to-be big brother. We're expecting next July! I don't have a nickname for this little one yet (which has me feeling rather guilty, as Bobble had his own little nickname at about 6w or 7w... and no, it wasn't "Bobble"!), but there will be one soon. We have lots of things in store to celebrate Bobble's little sibling, so keep an eye out for things on that, too!

A Thank You

I’d like to thank everyone for being so understanding these last few months with my lack of blog posts. It’s been a difficult time for our family between Bobble being sick for so long, my father-in-law being sick almost as long (though hospitalized), and then his passing. I appreciate your patience as my blog posts dwindled, and I appreciate the kind words that were offered.

I still have big things in the works for the blog, and I have a few product reviews coming up, too. It has been hard to really get things taken care of (in terms of reviews or even blog posts!), but I assure you, they are coming.

As always, I welcome any content suggestions you may have. If there are certain products you want to see reviews on, or topics you want to see posts on, please do comment and let me know. You can post on my FaceBook wall, send me an email, or leave a comment on my blog. I do read all comments left and all emails received. If you sign up for comment notifications, you’ll find that I do respond to comments left, too.

Again, thank you for your patience, and I hope you’ve at least enjoyed the larger giveaways I’ve been participating in lately in an effort to at least give you some new content while I was unable to create my own.

Earth's Best Toddler Biscuits Giveaway!

Enter to win your little one some delicious Earth's Best Toddler Biscuits!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Earth's Best Toddler Biscuits

Many parents already know the joys of teething. The drooly messes, the fussy baby, the swollen gums, tugging on the ears... it's all sorts of fun! (To see Teething FAQs on Earth's Best's page, go HERE.) Thankfully, there are many things we can do to help ease the pain and discomfort our little ones go through, including some cookies that are fantastic for teething! Earth's Best makes some biscuits (in both barley and wheat) that are fantastic for your teething little one. (They also make organic teething gel!) Not only are they good for your little one, but they are great to chew on to ease the discomfort those budding teeth are causing!

The Toddler Biscuits are:
  • USDA organic: no growth hormones, antibiotics, steroids or potentially harmful pesticides or herbicides
  • Good source of calcium
  • No added salt
  • No artificial flavors, colors, preservatives
  • Kosher certified
  • Individually wrapped in packs of two
Bobble loves these biscuits, and we used them long before I was ever an Earth's Best Blogger! They fit great into his little hands, and they don't crumble if he squeezes too hard! He would just gnaw on one end over and over, relieving his gums and (slowly) getting some yummy cookie, too!

You can find Earth's Best Toddler Biscuits, along with many other Earth’s Best products, online at the Earth’s Best Store, from Amazon.com, many other online retailers, or you can use the Earth’s Best Store Locator to find a retailer near you!

You can also enter to win some HERE!

Destruct-o Kid

Thankfully, Bobble has stayed healthy since my last post. I feared he was getting sick again after a visit to the library play time on Friday a bit over a week ago, but it appears to just have been from cutting his bottom canines.

The lack of writing, however, would be more attributed to my lack of feeling up-to-par. My apologies for that, but that was also something I couldn't have really planned for.

Bobble has entered a very destructive stage. Well, who am I kidding!? He has been in a very destructive stage! He likes throwing his toys (he dented our new fridge!), shoving items off of tables or any surface (like the receiver for our sound system..... straight off the entertainment center and onto the floor behind it!), whacking things with other items, ripping books up.... it's very frustrating. He used to be very gentle with books, and now he's destroying them. I try keeping them out of reach, but I feel books are very important and he should be able to read them whenever he wants. Granted, he can't read yet... but he does sit and look through them, page-by-page, babbling to the characters sometimes.

On the bright side, he has attempted to be helpful, too. He started putting dishes in the sink when he's done with them. Unfortunately, it's more of setting it on the counter and shoving it in or throwing it in... and that doesn't bode so well for our breakable dishes. He also decided that when he's done with something that it belongs in the sink.... like his robe, or a donut from the rock-n-stack toy.

I know this is (supposedly) just a phase, but it's so frustrating. We had a baby gate around the television and entertainment center, but that just seemed to encourage him to throw things over the gate (and sometimes hitting the television) as a game. Plus, he is rather smart.... he figured out how to move it himself. We would suddenly hear silence and run in from the bathroom, or preparing his lunch, to see him on the other side of the baby gate, pulling all the DVDs out. We already have cardboard taped up on our media center to keep him from ruining all those movies! Needless to say, we don't get to watch them often... if he sees us remove the tape, he starts copying us!

I was wondering what my readers did when their children hit stages like this. We have tried telling him no, and that it makes us sad when he does stuff like (whatever he is doing at that moment).... but he just laughs. If we set him in his chair and tell him this (and hold him still so he is unable to flee before we have told him this), he cries. We ask if he is going to do (whatever he did) again, and he will shake his head and sign "no".... but when we let him up, he runs over to whatever he was doing before and giggles and tries to do it again. *sigh*

For anyone unaware of our parenting preferences, we are not slapping his hand, smacking his bottom, or doing time-outs. I know there are ways to do this without resorting to those methods.... I just haven't figured them out yet.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween to all my readers! I hope you are having a fun (and safe!) time with your family and/or friends! We didn't have any festivities tonight, but we went to a party last Saturday with Bobble. He went as Charlie Brown, just as I mentioned a while back. I will upload a picture when I have the opportunity, likely over the weekend.

Also, if anyone was curious, this Kick-it Immune stuff seems to work really well. It could be sheer coincidence.... but Bobble is 100% better already. That was pretty darn fast. He also surprised me by signing for "more" of it after a full dropper (it suggests 2 droppers for kids over the age of 1, but I only gave him 1 the first day to watch for a reaction). He takes a dropper, shakes his head with squinty eyes and a crinkled face, then signs for more. I love it. Again, I have no clue if it was sheer coincidence or not, but if it really is this stuff being that awesome, I'm buying some.

If anyone can, I would also appreciate it if you went and voted for Bobble on Thirsties Facebook Contest Page. He's the one with the little leaf in his hand that is captioned "autumn leaves are falling". There seems to be a glitch, however, and it has duplicated my picture. Please vote on the one with the higher number!

Surprisingly Hard

It's been surprisingly hard trying to write here these last two months.... and not for a lack of things to say! Everyone that reads is aware (by now, anyway) that Bobble was sick for pretty much seven straight weeks. We were able to finally get over the illnesses, and we had a fantastic week last week! He was doing great at Montessori, he was sleeping beautifully, he was eating really well..... it was all just awesome. I missed having a happy little boy. I also thoroughly enjoyed having good sleep again!

Every Friday our local library offers a program for little kids (under age 5) to play for a couple hours. It's free, it allows for social interaction (for me and him!), and they have lots of toys that he just doesn't get exposed to anywhere else (like those really expensive playmats and structures made out of that material). My husband suggested I take him, and I thought that it would be a brilliant idea because he simply hasn't been in two months.

Guess who was exhibiting signs of a cold the very next day? *headdesk* Now, I haven't caught anything, so I'm holding on to that sliver of hope that it really is the fact his bottom two canines are visibly coming through.... but man. Talk about FRUSTRATING.

I'm very excited that we signed up to get a sample from www.wishgardenherbs.com a bit ago, and we actually got it in the mail yesterday. I heard about that company from a coworker (who uses namely holistic 'medicines'), and then saw that they had a FREE SAMPLE offer going on. It's hard to turn down a chance to try something for free when you wanted to try it anyway, so I signed up for a free sample of Kick-it Immune (For Kids), and we got it in the mail yesterday. I gave Bobble a half dose of it (simply to see if he had any reactions), and he didn't seem to mind it, though it smells like a shot of some random adult beverage. I let him taste a droplet first, and he signed 'more', so I gave him the whole dropper.... to which he signed 'all done' after. It was probably pretty strong. It did say it could be mixed with water for taste or simply placed under the tongue. I went the direct route. Anywho, here's to hoping that this stuff works. It's meant to boost the natural immune system and response, so I'm crossing my fingers. Obviously taking him to the doctor over and over (and over and over) didn't do diddly squat.

The company also has a bunch of other products, though not everything is available for a free sample. They do have things for Ear aches, calming/soothing, upset tummies, colic, cold season, coughs.... many other things. Oh, did I mention for helping you sleep? The above are also for children or infants, though they do have adult things, too. I decided to try this out since these are made with organic and wild-harvested botanicals, and they are herbal remedies. Again, we all saw how much the medicines from the doctor did for Bobble. *cough* nothing *cough*

So, here's to hoping he gets better (and stays better!) soon.... so I can write more here! I have plans for this blog, big plans... I just need my little guy to not be sick all the time so I can do something about them!

Disclosure: I receive a sample from the company through a promotion they were doing, and have not had any contact with the company in regards to a review on their product. Any opinions or statements above are my own and are not influenced by the company in any way, shape, or form.

Earth's Best Organic Yummy Tummy Instant Oatmeal

Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not make that meal something that is good for your little one, too? Earth's Best offers many breakfast items that will help get your child's day started off on the right foot!

Earth's Best Organic Yummy Tummy Instant Oatmeal is one of our favorites, and comes in both Maple & Brown Sugar or Apples & Cinnamon flavours. There are no artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives in them, and each serving contains 30 grams of whole grain. What's not to love about that?

Bobble likes the Yummy Tummy oatmeals, but we like to blend them up a bit more to where there aren't really any clumps of oats in it. Don't get me wrong, it tastes great as it is! Both of us (yes, me too!) just are weird with textures of any food. Soooo, that being said, if your little one is a bit finicky of an eater, try to blend this up a wee bit with a hand blender. Odds are, they'll take to it and you'll know they are getting the wholesome foods you want them to have!

Just in case you don't remember why breakfast is important, here are a few tidbits for you as well. :)

A typical person will spend about eight hours asleep each night with no food or water. When they wake up in the morning, their body is dehydrated and they have little energy to start out the day with. This is for EVERYONE, not just munchkins! So, skipping a meal in the morning will mean you likely will eat more throughout the day (and generally those foods end up being unhealthy and high in calories). Academically speaking, children (or anyone, really!) who eat a well-balanced, complete breakfast will perform better than those who skip breakfast regularly.

For more breakfast tips and ideas, check out the Bring on Breakfast article on Earth's Best website. You can also keep an eye out on my blog for a giveaway for your own box of oatmeal from Earth's Best!

Disclosure: I receive sample(s) for the purpose of testing and review. These opinions are my own and may differ from those of your own. Thoughts Of Fluff is not responsible for shipment of the prize(s).

I guess I had it coming

Anyone that's followed this blog for a while knows that I wrote about pinkeye, and how I had unintentionally been judging those parents way back when. I just thought it was so gross how they didn't wash their hands, and didn't think anything of it. Obviously, from the entry linked above, you can see I realized that might be inaccurate, and it was unfair of me to assume they don't wash their hands.

Then there's today. I have pinkeye. My son has pinkeye. My husband has pinkeye. The only household members without pinkeye? My 3 cats. So I knew that pinkeye was highly contagious, and I knew that you could get it from not washing your hands after bathroom usage/diaper changes. When I got a letter from Bobble's school (Montessori -- he goes to childcare there) stating that they had a child with a confirmed case of pinkeye, I wasn't too concerned. That child was actually in preschool, Bobble is in the Toddler Program.

Unfortunately, Bobble has been sick since September started, much less October. Teething, Stomach Bug, Cold, Staph (rash), Ear Infection, Pinkeye, Thrush, Yeast..... it's been one battle after another. Two weeks ago was the Upper Respiratory Infection and Pinkeye diagnosis. Drats. I thought I got away without the pinkeye issue. Three days ago I woke up with a less-than-happy eye, but I didn't think it was pinkeye for a few reasons:
  • Bobble has no visible signs of Pinkeye anymore
  • I had no crusties or drainage of any type
  • My eye was only bloodshot near the tear duct, nowhere else

Well, the following morning, I woke up with crusties and my entire eye unhappy. Shoot. On the bright side, I have the ability to just use my breastmilk to take care of it, though I wasn't certain how much or how often to use it. I called my doctor's office and they told me 2-3 drops 4-5x a day. Yes, they actually gave me a dosage for my own breastmilk. At least that means they know it will work, right?

I went to work anyway, as I had a deadline that only I could work on, and they needed it. When I was done working, they "strongly encouraged" me to go home. I was promised I wouldn't be in trouble for missing work (since I had missed a lot with Bobble lately... namely just leaving early for appointments), and then gave me the okay to take off today as well to get "less contagious". I argued a wee bit with them, saying I didn't see how it was that big of a deal. I was using germ-x at my PERSONAL computer if I touched my face (before touching my desk/mouse/keyboard again), the couple of times I used a public computer I lysoled the mouse/keyboard, and I didn't use my hands to open doors at all. I told them that it wasn't like I was going to rub my eye on people. A co-worker chimed in that you can get it without touching the person.... and that she knew this from working at a daycare way-back-when.

This intrigued me, so I Googled it. First things first, I didn't realize there was a bacterial form and a viral form of pinkeye. Here's what I learned:

Viral pinkeye

Viral pinkeye is often caused by an adenovirus, which is a common respiratory virus that can also cause a sore throat or upper respiratory infection. The herpes virus can also cause viral pinkeye.
From: http://www.webmd.com/eye-health/tc/pinkeye-topic-overview

Bacterial pinkeye

An infection may develop when bacteria enter the eye or the area around the eye. Some common infections that cause pinkeye include:

Soooo, as you can see, it wasn't just from "bathroom" related things! I honestly had no idea. So we all have had some sort of virus that has caused throat pain and coughing for the last 1-3 weeks (depending on which one of us it is), and my little Bobble also was being treated for a (staph) rash. I guess we were just doomed for this one.

I also thought we were in the clear when I caught pinkeye. Bobble had no symptoms anymore, as I said. He has, however, been poking me in the eye (learning body parts, and eyes/nose are his current favorites), and I'm assuming that's how I got it.

Yesterday I administered breastmilk drops to my eye. My husband insisted upon buying the eyedrop medicine. By the end of the day yesterday, my eye looked 2x better than it had (still bad though). It also was instant relief when milk was dropped into my eye. Today, my eye looks barely bloodshot at all. Nobody would think it was anything more than maybe an eyelash snuck into my eye. That's it. I love it! Still using milk, but it's always on hand, so not a big deal. My husband, however, put in eye drops last night. Instantly started going "owwwwwww, this STINGS!!!!!". He still insists that he must use those drops as he doesn't think the milk will help. I guess he likes the pain. I'm just thankful that I'm still breastfeeding!

BentoBoxes -- Keep It Separated!

If you've been looking for a lunch box for your child, have you checked out Laptop Lunches Bento Boxes yet? The bento boxes are a fantastic way to pack healthy, well-portioned lunches for you or your children. They are stylish, eco-friendly lunch boxes that are reusable, recyclable, long lasting, and dishwasher safe. Better yet, they contain NO phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), PVC, or lead. They are great for traveling, going to work, or going to school.

Laptop Lunches sent me one of their awesome Bento boxes to try out:

PhotobucketPhotobucket

I was thrilled to find out that they were (top rack) dishwasher safe, as this would make it a lot easier to clean on those days where Bobble just won't stay in one place long enough for me to collect my thoughts before he makes another mess!

As you will be able to see from the pictures that will follow, Bobble wanted to make certain that he helped with showing off the Bento Box. I was thrilled that he was so excited about it, because it was for him to take to daycare, after all!

The box is easy to open, but not so easy that Bobble could do it himself. I find this a HUGE plus, personally, as he is in a "throw everything that you can" phase when it comes to food.

Photobucket

Of course, once it's open, he has no issues what-so-ever!

Photobucket

It was very difficult for me to get a shot without Bobble running in the way or grabbing items and moving them around, so this was the best I could do once it was open:

Photobucket

The compartments are separated and easily moved around inside the box to be however you like it set up best. You can see there is a compartment on the right hand side of the box for eating utensils, and three of the five containers have lids.

Photobucket

The lids have different pictures on them to show what's inside (assuming you want to follow the suggestion on the lids!) like fruits and veggies. The tiny container doesn't have a picture, but it's obviously for something like dressing, sauce, etc.

Photobucket

I love how well these containers seal, because nothing can spill from them, but they aren't difficult to open up. I also love the pictures on the lids because it makes it a bit exciting for Bobble. While this can hold much more food than the can eat in a day at childcare, this will be perfect for him when he gets a bit older!

Okay, I admit it. I've totally stolen this for myself until that point in time.... but at that rate I might as well just get him a new one! That doesn't mean he doesn't get to enjoy this while we are out and about, though! I can put some broccoli in one container, some ranch dressing (his favourite!) in the tiny container, and a few pieces of fruit (like sliced grapes) to enjoy while we're out running errands for an extended period of time.

While I don't have a carrier for the BentoBox, you can find them on the Laptop Lunches store page under Carriers, Totes & Sleeves.

The BentoBox is also the perfect companion to MOMables lunches (my review seen here), and are featured in many of the recipes they send out. (Such as the Philly steak sandwich that can be seen on their Sample Menu page.)

Laptop Lunches has offered to give one of my readers a $25.00 gift certificate to their store! You can enter below for your chance to win! If you don't win, don't be discouraged! These containers are durable and will definitely save you money by ensuring you don't need to keep purchasing a new lunch box (or containers for inside it!) year after year. Check out their store to see all the great items you can purchase, including their Bento Buddies (extra containers, all with lids!).
