Thursday Tip: Bath Time

Some children are content to sit in a tub while you wash them quickly and get them out. Others want to be in the tub as long as you will let them (or until the water runs cold). Many children, however, want nothing more than to throw a fit if you try to bathe without them. Sometimes that's because they want to bathe too, but I think, more often that not, it's because you've shut them out of the room you are in.

No matter what scenario sounds the most like your child, there is a possible solution. I understand this isn't a solution for literally everyone, but this might help for anyone who has a child that is a skilled sitter (up until you aren't comfortable with it anymore).

Both of my children fall into the "I want to be in the tub every possible waking moment" category, though Squiggle was like that and she freaked out if I left the room for a millisecond. The best way for me to successfully shower and the children to be happy was to shower with them on the other end of the tub. Bobble, being the crazy kid he is, loved being IN the falling water if I let him.

I would grab a few bath toys, start up the shower so it was nice and hot (the water cools as it falls, so hot to me is luke warm by the time it reaches them), and climb in with baby in tow. I would plug the tub and allow a bit of water to collect, then drain it when it got a bit high. I'd repeat until I was done showering, then I'd bathe the munchkin (after all, they just sat in water that was rinsing dirt off of mom!), and we'd get out at the same time. That usually resulted in a happy baby.

Also, we have one of those sliding track doors on our tub, so there is no place to sit to bathe baby from the outside, anyway.

Salmon Patties

Finger foods are always great for toddlers and munchkins just learning to eat. Salmon patties are one of those great finger foods... if you like salmon. I dislike salmon. In fact, I hate the SMELL of salmon. Just because I don't like something, however, doesn't mean I will deny my children the opportunity to have it.

We were grilling fish the other day, so hubby opened up a can of salmon, took out the bones and skin, and made some (apparently) delicious salmon patties. They were so good (again, apparently) that Bobble ate an entire patty (which was the size of an adult burger), and Squiggle ate a third of one.

It's not a fancy recipe, but the kids love it, so I thought I would share it.

Salmon Patties
1 Can pink salmon
1 egg
~ 1 tsp. dill
~ 1/2c. bread crumbs

Take bones/skin out of fish.

Mix together and form patties.

Cook like you would a burger (approximately 5 min. a side)

That's it! We served it with a box of organic shells and cheese and some left over veggies.

A hot meal with a young baby (eating out)

When Bobble was little, I had an infant car seat that I took in places. It took up a lot of space and he always ended up nursing at some point anyway, so he never stayed in it. I frequently would hold the baby while my food went cold, then hand the baby to hubby while I ate.

I missed hot meals.

I know that hot meals are a luxury as a mom. I've heard this. I've known this. I still missed them.

When I had Squiggle, I realized there is an easier way. Sure, when the child can sit up in the booster or high chair it's easier.... but there is a way before they are big enough, too!

It's sooooo simple!

STAGGER. THE. ORDER.

Before going in, hubby and I would decide who was the hungriest. They ate first. We would tell the waiter/waitress that we want to stagger the order, and the person eating first would order. When the food came out, the person holding the baby would order their meal. That was generally enough time for the first person to eat most, if not all, of their food.

Baby stays happy.

Everyone has a hot meal.

WIN!

I wish I thought of that with my first. We rarely eat out, but those few times we do, hot meals are appreciated.

I hope this simple idea helps another family enjoy hot meals.
